One of the basic ideas behind laminate was to provide an inexpensive way to replace carpeting with a wood-like floor.
Laminate consists mainly of HDF or MDF wood fiber boards that have been laminated with printed, resin-soaked paper. Thanks to highly developed photography technology, parquet motifs, for example, can be photographed and reproduced in very good resolution.
The high wood fiber content means that a laminate floor is relatively warm to the feet compared to a design or decorative flooring.
A laminate floor is usually laid floating, which means that it can often be laid on the old subfloor after the carpet has been removed, provided that the subfloor is sufficiently solid, level and dry.
Our tip on what you should pay attention to: Since the click connection between the laminate elements is made of only millimeter-thin HDF/MDF, it is extremely important for the durability of a laminate floor to have a level surface on which the laminate elements cannot move. If the surface is uneven and the laminate elements can move, it will only take a short time for damage to the laminate to occur.
